Part Time, Fixed Term (0.6 FTE, 12-month contract)

Applications are invited for the post of Music Performance Operations Officer in the Department of Music.

Royal Holloway is one of the UK’s leading universities for music, ranked no.1 in the UK for music research (Complete University Guide 2022–26, Times Good University Guide 2022–26). Our vibrant programme of music performance encompasses classical, contemporary, jazz and world styles. We run over 60 concerts per year on campus, and we support over 15 performing ensembles including staff-led groups such as the Royal Holloway Choir, Symphony Orchestra, New Music Collective and Percussion Group plus an array of student-run ensembles. Music is an integral part of Royal Holloway’s Arts & Culture Framework, providing a high-quality and innovative experience for students, staff, local communities and the wider region. We use campus features such as the Victorian Picture Gallery and our woodland grounds to inspire creative collaborations including new music composition and soundwalks, and we work closely with related disciplines including Drama and Media Arts to deliver music theatre and multimedia performances.

Working closely with the Music Performance team, you will help coordinate the day-to-day delivery of this ambitious programme of concerts, rehearsals, workshops, and other performance activity. You will act as a key operational point of contact for students, staff, visiting artists, and external suppliers, helping to anticipate requirements and ensure that activities are delivered smoothly, safely, and to a high professional standard.

The role will provide practical, technical, and operational support for concerts, recitals, rehearsals, and workshops. This will include preparing performance and rehearsal spaces; setting up and moving instruments, equipment, staging, and PA systems; supporting front-of-house operations and coordinating student volunteers; coordinating the day-to-day use of music practice spaces; and supporting the management, maintenance, and organisation of our extensive collection of musical instruments and equipment.

You will work collaboratively with students, academic and professional services staff, visiting performers, and external suppliers, following University processes and relevant health and safety requirements. A key part of the role will be helping to provide an outstanding experience for everyone engaging with music performance at Royal Holloway, whether as a performer, student, colleague, visitor, or audience member.

You are likely to have experience of supporting live music, performance, events, venue operations, or arts activity, and may be looking to further develop a career in facilitating music performance. You will have a good practical understanding of musical ensembles, instruments, and PA systems, enabling you to support effective venue and ensemble set-ups and monitor the condition and appropriate use of equipment. You will also have strong communication, organisational, IT, and team-working skills, alongside a commitment to providing an excellent and welcoming service.

The ability to work flexible hours is essential, including regular front-of-house and operational work at evening concerts and events.

The post is initially offered on a one-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of extension.

The Department of Music’s teaching and research is underpinned by a commitment to equality and social justice. We welcome applications from all sections of the community, particularly from groups under-represented in the university workforce.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Training and Development opportunities
  • Pension Scheme with generous employer contribution
  • Various schemes including Cycle to Work, Season Ticket Loans and help with the cost of Eyesight testing.
  • Free parking

The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the University is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London

Royal Holloway is one of the founding signatories of the Technician Commitment, an initiative of universities and research institutions that aims to improve the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for all technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.
