Research Technician (Mass Spectrometry)

Applications are invited for the post of Research Technician (Mass Spectrometry) in the School of Biological Sciences.

The successful applicant will join the School of Biological Sciences, supporting research activities across the School to ensure project objectives and deliverables are met in a timely manner. The School of Biological Sciences comprises of 3 research centres; Biomedical Sciences; Ecology; Evolution and Behaviour; and Plant Molecular Sciences and provides a stimulating research environment and well-equipped laboratories. A research technician is being sought to run the School’s state of the art analytical suite with complementary MS platforms serving both metabolomic and proteomic applications (a high resolution LC-QTOF/MS, LC-ion-trap MSn., and MALDI-TOFMS/MS).

The successful candidate will hold a BSc in Biochemistry or Biological Sciences. They will have worked in a research laboratory and have experience in a variety of mass spectrometry techniques as well as analytical techniques such as HPLC/UPLC and GC. Principally, this role will be to provide technical support with the running and maintenance of the MS facilities and associated laboratory equipment, including routine maintenance of the analytical platforms. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge of quality control procedures, robust experimental design principles, statistics and the handling of large sample sets. They will have experience in method development, workflow optimisation and troubleshooting. Experience in the preparation of both small molecule and protein samples for analysis by MS is essential. The successful applicant will also be expected to provide IT support and run bioinformatics pipelines. The ability to work well as part of a large, diverse team and the ability to communicate effectively is also essential for this role.

This is a full time post, for a fixed term period of 12 months.
