Salary in range of £33,797 - £40,322 per annum pro rata. London Allowance of £2,134 will be payable in addition to salary.

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in Dark Matter Physics.

This is a post to work on dark matter direct detection experiment, hosted jointly between the Dark Matter & Neutrino groups within the Departments of Physics at RHUL and Lancaster University.  Both groups have research programs focused around liquid Argon detectors, and are collaborating on the DarkSide-20k and DUNE experiments. The groups also have broad detector development programmes, as part of which we are collaborating on the QUEST-DMC project.  QUEST-DMC is a Lancaster, Oxford, RHUL and Sussex consortium building a new experimental platform at Lancaster University to search for interactions of sub-GeV dark matter particles, combining a macroscopic quantum system, superfluid helium-3 (3He), with quantum-amplified calorimetry.  

This post will involve working with a team applying multidisciplinary skills in the general areas of physics analysis, software development, and detector characterisation.  The post-holder will contribute to characterisation of the DarkSide-20k experiment’s silicon photosensor system, and develop the detector characterisation software for QUEST-DMC.  The post-holder will contribute to the development of dark matter search analysis tools, with emphasis on radiogenic backgrounds to low-mass dark matter search. 

The holder of this post will be expected to help produce independent and original research, to submit publications to refereed journals, and to work together with and supervise MSci and PhD students.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or a closely related area, as well as prior experience relevant to one or more of the following: (I) low-background experimentation including simulation, commissioning and/or data analysis; (ii) design, construction, and/or analysis of He-3 experiments; (iii) design, simulation, construction, and/or analysis of SiPM or TES detector systems; (iv) detector simulation development; (v) analysis framework software development; and, (vi) calibration and particle identification in noble liquid detectors.

The duration of the post is two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding.
